Dealing with stress


School can be a stressful environment. Conflicting homework demands and needs can cause stress to build up. Pressure builds up, and your confidence and self-esteem might below. If you feel that your workload is becoming too much and that your work and health is suffering, read on for some ideas to help reduce stress.


 

We all face periods of difficulty at school- in fact, a certain amount of stress may actually help us to perform well in challenging situations. However, ongoing chronic stress can reduce our resilience, which leads to a drop in performance, and causes potential issues with our physical and mental health. Do you feel that you can't deal with any more stress? Here are some tips that can help.


  1. Acknowledge that your feelings are valid. Sometimes you can't control the situation that you are in and there isn't always a 'quick fix,' but that is completely normal and a part of life.

  2. Make sure that you take breaks to refresh your mind and leave school work behind at the end of the day. Always remember that there is someone to talk to at school, whether that be a teacher, school nurse or just a trusted friend.

  3. Sleep! The recommended amount of sleep for teenagers is 8-10 hours every night. Sleep is a very important time for your brain to make memories and links, and getting more quality sleep will help you remember and process things better. You should also make sure that you eat and drink plenty to have a healthy diet.

  4. Have a healthy work/life balance. Spend time with family and friends and do things that you enjoy, this will ensure that you still have time to work on yourself and not just your work.

  5. Exercise has been proven to reduce the level of stress hormones in our bodies and help us sleep better so this will help with your learning and school life. You may also wish to try out some mindfulness techniques such a meditation or journaling.
