How to prepare for exam season

Exam season can be an extremely nerve-racking and stressful time for all of us. Making sure you are prepared is the best way to feel ready and relaxed at the time of the exam. Here are some tips to prepare for exam season.

1) Start your revision early

The earlier you start your revision, the greater the chances of success. It will mean less stress, no last-minute cramming and no all-nighters. Make sure all of your notes are complete at least a month prior to exams, so closer to the exam you don't waste time writing them out. Starting revision early also allows you to go through the content at your own pace which makes revision more enjoyable and less stressful.

2) Make a study plan or timetable

Create a timetable to ensure that you have that you properly manage your time leading up to the exam. Make sure that you prioritise topics and subjects that you find more difficult and also make sure you are prepared for the earlier exams.

3) Put what you’ve learnt into practice

It's pointless to keep reading the textbook or rewriting notes till the day of the exam. Instead, you need to test your knowledge and apply your it to practice questions. This will allow you to discover the gaps in your understanding and consolidate everything in time for the exam. It also allows you to spot patterns in exam questions; exam boards do the same type of questions every year, so the more you do the better you’ll feel in the exam.

4) Have a dedicated study space!

Clear your desk or study area and keep everything as organised as possible. What are the things that distract you when studying? Think about it and make sure they're nowhere near. The obvious ones are phones, computers and TVs, so keep them out of reach. Have all of your supplies nearby as to keep disruptions minimal. Have an appropriate study space, sit at a desk or a dining table. Try not to do your revision on your bed. If you don’t have a desk at home maybe visit the local library.

5) Relax & take breaks

Regular breaks are necessary when revising, your brain needs to regain its focus after long periods of studying. It is not the best idea to study long hours without breaks, because long-term retention of knowledge is almost impossible. Effective revision does not mean hours and hours on end of revision. Work smart, not hard. Be productive with your time and if you lose focus then take a break and come back later.
